YWAM schools usually take place within a YWAM community at one of our centres around the world. They combine classroom teaching with ongoing discipleship and practical service. Most programs incorporate several weeks of application activities, often in another culture, where the principles learned are practiced in order to accelerate learning.
The Discipleship Training School (DTS) is a pre-requisite to all other YWAM programs or staff positions.

TRIBAL WINDS DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING SCHOOL has a "frontier missions" emphasis on NATIVE NORTH AMERICA.
Our Discipleship Training School has the same standard as any YWAM-DTS curriculum butwhat separates us is our focus, on reaching the Natives of N. America and the Pacific Rim. Our training is often amongst the Hopis, the oldest tribe in N. America . This training consists of a 12 week "lecture" phase and an eight week outreach phase.
Even though our focus is to reach our Native American tribes, our DTS will equip anyone to better reach any indigenous peoples on earth more sensitively and more effectively! Our DTS is dual faceted because we have a regular DTS as well as numerous trips out to the Hopi reservation during the lecture phase.

Additional Outreach Information
The TRIBAL WINDS Outreach Phase has normally been conducted at Native American reservations in the US. This is something we pray about during the Lecture Phase and then under staff guidance make a decision about for the final eight weeks. The school fees cover outreach within the US, however, if we are led beyond US borders we will need to each raise additional funds. This is not an unusual YWAM DTS scenario.
Also, we can often offer OUTDOOR ADVENTURE opportunities such as rock climbing and river rafting. These activities are done on a private trip basis, so all participants must share the costs equally. Usually the costs are minimal, such as $15 per day.
Watch Charity's TV interview! Charity did her DTS with us in 2004 and served on the Hopi reservation for six years!
Nathan Cost- Presently a teacher at Radloff Middle School in Duluth, Geogia.
I had no idea what I was doing or what would come of this great adventure.Within the first week we had started our DTS, been introduced to our wonderful neighbors, jumped into prison ministry, Sunday school class, and various prayer meetings. The teachers for our DTS came from both the other side of the world and just around the corner. The diversity of thought, color, and culture was unmistakable. Our teachers were male, female, white, indigenous, church planters, preachers, prophets, and counselors.
For the next two months we traveled to various reservations throughout the Southwest: Jemez, Jicarilla Apache, Navajo, and Zuni.We were taught to be students and servants. We were taught to observe, learn, and process in order to see and understand what God was doing in that land.
While at YWAM Tribal Winds I learned of God’s heart and became intimately connected with the untamable YAWHEH in the desert.I learned what it means to be a true disciple and student of The Word.God showed us clearly, that his plans and intentions for America’s first nations peoples are more than any mind can imagine. He is moving, there is no doubt about it, and he will continue to pursue his people.
To say that I am thankful for my five and half months spent living with the Hopi and being discipled at my DTS is a great understatement. It changed my life.
Ainauia Maluolefale Ulutu Jr.- I would just like to say PRAISE GOD for his faithfulness & his LOVE! In this DTS, many subjects were taught that made me realize how much i dont know GOD & that, is His GLORY! Praise GOD that we only know a tiny portion of who He is & yet the presence of that "tiny portion" still changes nations & still changes hearts & communities! GOD really showed me the value of who i am in HIM & that outside of HIM there is no me! I praise GOD that through his work I have accepted who I am & who he has made me as a SAMOAN ISLANDER AMERICAN. I thank GOD for my YWAM families in AZ- they are crazy fun & crazy worshipers & crazy is what i needed coming to DTS! Letting GOD & letting GO & letting LOOSE!! woooho0! So praise GOD that He has exposed me to missions & like my grandparents i would like to go into MISSIONS FULL time! chhhhhhhhhiiiiiiihooooooo faafetai le atua o lou alofa, o oe le ALI'I! & yes, wooohoo to that!
Christina Beckwith, currently a pastor's wife in Fillmore, UT. One of my friends who knew about YWAM said I was too old to attend the Tribalwinds DTS. I applied anyways, and was accepted and attended in 2008. What a mind expanding, eye opening experience! I have been to oodles of wonderful seminars over the years, but the next few months were like going to an intense God filled conference each week. Godly speakers from different parts of the country and wonderful topics, such as Father Heart of God, Intercession, Spiritual Warfare and many more kept us on track. Then our six week outreach to the Philippines lead by 23 yr. olds gave me immense gratitude and appreciation for this younger generation! I turned 60 in the Philippines on our DTS outreach.
I am so thankful to God for giving me that opportunity. It opened my eyes to the world of missions. If you just want to have the most awesome experience of a lifetime, you would greatly benefit by going through a DTS. If one likes young people and wants to relive one's youth (more or less, lol) attending Tribalwinds DTS would be extremely exhilarating and totally Spirit filled and led! Words can't adequately describe the life changing experience ~ just DO IT!
Tuition: $4,500 (This includes all outreaches in the USA to other Native American reservations. If we hear the Lord calling a part of our team overseas, you would need to raise additional funds for the airfare. )
There is no other DTS with the beauty of Grand Canyon and the possibilities of rock climbing in Sedona or at Jack's Canyon, river rafting down San Juan river (on Arizona/ Utah border) with our own rafts.
We love to worship here at YWAM Tribalwinds DTS!! Many people tell us that this is a holy place. It is a place to go deeper with the Lord-- to understand and hear His heartbeat for yourself and the nations!
